The Best Punk & Hardcore Records and Tapes of 2016 LIST ONLY

Rakta photo stolen from Cvlt Nation (though it probably doesn't belong to them either)
By Nathan G. O'Brien
Look, we all know how this list season bullshit goes, right? Adequately paid music journalists sit in bed drinking tea with their laptops, typing up self-assuring paragraphs about each of "the best albums you didn't hear this year because you're not as cool as me" or whatever.

Let's be real, most of the time those posers haven't even listened to half the stuff they put on the their lists but they don't want to not seem cool, because seeming cool is like, the only reasons to be a music journalist in the first place. And if you don't have something on your list that is on other people's lists, then you're also breaking the main rule of music journalism that clearly states you must copy all other music journalists and never form an opinion that isn't shared by all other music journalists.

Well I'm no saint either. Rest assured I'll be writing up a bunch of lists in the coming weeks for various outlets, because, hey, it's very important that I look cool too. But for now, and in the interest of brevity, here's a description-less master list of all the 2016 punk & hardcore records and tapes that I listened to this year. Not all of it is actually the best stuff--in fact some of it is downright horrible--but if I called it "some punk & hardcore records and tapes" there's very little chance you'd be reading this, thus robbing me of the self-congratulatory pleasure of knowing someone is looking at a thing I did even if that thing is just a list with a terrible intro. I'm sorry; I love you.

Soda Killers Magazine #11 OUT NOW~!

SODA KILLERS//PUNK, RAP, AND GRAFFITI MAGAZINE//ISSUE #11
Minneapolis, MN + Summer 2016

Happy to announce the release of Soda Killers no.11. Inside you'll find an exclusive interview with Twin Cities graffiti artist ERGOT. (He also did this amazing cover.) We go pretty in-depth and get all interpersonal relations-y. I think graff heads, sociopaths, vandals, and regular people alike will dig it.

There's also an interview with Chicago-based punk trio Boilerman, whom are both great guys and funny guys. Also very serious guys. We talk about things like Taco Bell breakfast, Justin Theroux being the best punk ever, and what it's like living in a world where cops can get away with murder whenever they feel like it.

And rounding out the interviews portion, I have a candid conversation with Cleveland punker (and kinda legend, depending who you ask) Tony Erba about pro-wrestling, his band Fuck You Pay Me, memories of Thrashfest III at Babylon Cafe, and if the well-being of performers matters if the match is good.

There's also awesome contributions from the likes of Clell Miller (Luke Sick), Dan Lactose (DJ Eons One), and Doom Goblin. Clell talks about rap tapes, heady beers, and the Golden State Warriors. Dan recalls his days coming up in the mail-trade world and shares a story of an incident from a Capitalist Casualties show back in the day. Doomy G muses on her oppositional disorder and how it applies specifically to that shitty band Radiohead.

The issue is rounded out by ERGOT graff flicks and a healthy chunk of record & tape reviews.

36 pages cover-to-cover, half-size, photocopied in black & white with some color.

I'm just going to say it: Soda Killers is the best punk, rap, and graffiti magazine on the planet.

HDD Radio #48: New Punk & Hardcore, Intelligent Hoodlum, I'll Fight You (Maybe), and More

Despite my life being hectic as can be right now, I squeezed in some time to record a new episode. When I'm not spinning new punk and hardcore records and tapes, I work myself into a shoot about using the middle initial in my name, challenge imaginary people to fights, and mispronounce a bunch of Spanish and German band names and songs. I toss in a few wacky numbers from the late -'60s, early-'70s, and early-'80s, and a couple Nick Bockwinkle & Bobby Heenan AWA promos, and bookend it all with some Tragedy the Intelligent Hoodlum tracks. Hit me on Twitter and Instagram at @OMG_NOB and/or email me at thee.n.o.b (at) gmail (dot) com. And please take a moment to check out hotdogdayz.bigcartel, where you'll find zines, mixtapes, tote bags, and bunch of my old cassettes that I'm selling.

HotDogDayz #8 OUT NOW~!

HOTDOGDAYZ//ASSEMBLAGE OF JUNK FANZINE//ISSUE #8

You know that old saying, the best art is that which is made in haste? Well not only did I make that up just now, but it's also not true. At least not in this case. This issue is tied with HDD no.7 for the dumbest thing I've ever published. Read the description of that issue and you'll have an idea of what this one is like, as they are equally as stupid. Except now there's four more pages of idiocy than before.

Half size, 28 pages, photocopied in black & white. Comes with extra goodies. I'd feel much better about myself if I gave this to you for free, but hey, I've never really felt good about myself so I'm not about to start now.

It's a buck. I think we can all live with that. Buy it in the fancy new HDD Store.

Also,  I am down to less tote bags than you can count on one hand even if you only had four fingers. So if you want one of those, now is the time. UPDATE: Tote bags are sold out! Thanks everybody!

HDD Radio #44: Heavy Metal is Stupid

What's up rockers! Keep it locked on KHDD 89.9 FM; a brand new episode of HotDogDayz Radio is on the air! Punk rock, hardcore, and what's that, heavy metal? Well, ah, yeah... sort of. Does late '90s/early '00s splatter-death-gore-grind count? Eh, who cares right? I give the listeners what they want (even if they don't know what's best for themselves) and that's all that matters. Check it out. And if you missed your chance to win a tote bag, you can still get your grubby, unusually large, and kind of like, ah, damaged hands on one if you act fast enough. Go to hotdogdayz/bigcartel.com to find out. Alright, all jokes aside, I really appreciate everyone that takes the time to listen to my show. Find me on Twitter & Instagram: @OMG_NOB

Nathan
